All about the bird: parakeets - Bird Parakeet Questions
Question #1:
Will my parakeets breed if one misses a different one?
Okay, I know I ask a lot of questions about breeding. But I need all the information I can get. Recently I wanted to breed these two budgies I thought looked cute and would make cute babies.. I let them bond for about 4 months before I tried putting the nest box in. Than I looked stuff up and found out your not supposed to breed a female budgie over 4 years of age, cause of causes of egg binding etc.. So I removed her from the cage and I realized I had a female budgie that was the same age as The male. But they didn't know each other that well.. So I put them in a cage together wall all the other birds were in the flight cage. And after about 7 days of bonding with the new female they started fighting. THAN the female that was previously with him started to cheer him on and now they keep tweeting to each other, and he's not paying any attention to the new female budgie.. I think maybe he misses her? What should I do to increase the chances of the male and new female bonding more?Question #2:
can i keep multiple canaries together?
in an aviary: length 4m; width 1,3m; height 2,5m.it will be nicely planted, but not too dense,
receives morning sunlight, and has a shallow fountain.
i was doing my research on how many canaries can be kept together:
a lot of people say i should put lots of females, and only 1 / 2 males.
some say i should put in lots of males too, so they become too tired to fight.
and one source said canaries, once mated, will become bonding pair like pigeons or parakeets.
so i don't know which one is right... can anyone help me?
btw, i'm not going to keep too many canaries, i don't plan on becoming a breeder, just want to make a nice community of birds...
thank you
oh yea, during my long research, i did browse youtube, and apparently they CAN keep more than one canaries, and since i heard loud singing i suppose there's more than one males available...
still, is there any slight possibility that they can pair for life?
Question #3:
How do i convince my parents to let me get a parrot?
FOr my entire life and im serious, i have wanted either a Congo African Grey or a blue and gold or a severe macaw. Actually anytype of macaw. I really never brought it up but i have showed my mom awesome videos and pictures of them doing silly things just so it kind of makes an impact when i tell her. I have told her i have wanted one a few days ago and she told me i would be allowed to have one but i already have a lot of pets. Now that statment is true. But my birthday is in june and for my big birthday present i want to go to an exotic parrot store and get my own or just to go look and hopefully convince my parents. Altough i have a lot of pets, Half of them are on their last lives. One oof my dogs is turing 11 years old and she is always sick and a few years ago she almost died from bloat. My guinea pig is turing 8 yrs old and she is recently coming over a cold. Them my 2 hamsters are about 3 so they wont be aroind much longer. And recently my mom go's out and gets 2 parakeets that i hate. My younge pets are my chinchilla and my other dog who is turing 2. They know i am responsible enough because she said so. But having a lot of pets is the problem. Now like i said i want one for my birthday on june 3rd. I'm turning 13. I have pet sit my bff's african grey and macaw and i was in love with that bird and so was everyone else in my family. My mom said when im older i could get one when i was like 6 and its now 6 yrs later. I have thought about giving one of my hamsters away to my good friend because she loves hamsters and i never have time to play with her because she kind of hates me but loves my friend. i told my mom i would give one away and then could i get one. She says she would think about it. I only want money for my bday because i am saving up for the cage and stuff for the bird and my mom knows that because she said it was a good idea. Then on my bday i would get the bird or the day before it because my bday is on a sunday. I know they live long but i wouldnt want any other pet just because these parrots would be my best friend probably. I already added up the prices of the supplies and i found the most decient cage and playground thing to buy and i started saving up a month ago. How do i convince my parents? PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE THING AGAIN BECAUSE I DONT WANT ANY RUDE ANSWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Question #4:
How will my parakeets breed?
So I set up a breeding cage for my two birds that are about 2-3 years and they have only bonded with each other for 10 days. They seemed to like each other, because they weren't pecking at all .. After about 7 days with being in the same cage they started fighting more.. Idk why! At first I thought they were kissing cause they were making those sounds. Than it turned to fighting. Any advise?Question #5:

Question #8:
Parakeets, need some help with my new Parakeets?
First of all if I'm missing info I will add as an edit later on.I'm having a hard time with two issues with my Parakeets. 1. I built them a nest so they can sleep and breed. They won't go near it. Actually they stay opposite side of the cage completely. I have moved it twice, it is as high as it can go in the cage. The Nest: it's a plastic coffee container, 7inch wide, 5 inch high, round. I put a hole on the side for the door. Do any Parakeets experts see a problem with what I have typed so far?
2. Their sex. I can clearly make out 3 of 5 being male from their cere. Blue. However the other 2 there is barely any color. Almost a hint of a thin blue line but unsure. I know one of them is about 3 months old but don't know which one. Any other way of differentiating male or female?
My cage setup. 30in high, 22 wide, 22 deep. Tree branches, wooden dowels, one rope, toys, mirror, one food and two waters. Also have a calcium brick (I forget the name of it). Room temp 21 at all times (will be warmer in the summer). House humidifier on.
Any expert advice on the above? Am I doing anything wrong? Should I change anything? What am I trying to do? My first desire is to make them happy. They are already adapted to me. East out of my hand and don't jump/fly away when approaching. Taming-slow process and I have lots of patience. My second desire is to have some new babies.
Their current attitude and behavior. Morning is cheerful and singing. Then eats. Later on in the afternoon every other day I think they clean themselves. I feed them high grade bird food from the pet store, fresh veggies and fruits. They love parsley. They're very affectionate with each other. Including male on male so there is a bond between them all. If unfortunately they are all male then so be it, am not returning any for females. But the nest issue I want to fix.
I think that's all the info I can give. Thanks for your answers.
The Unknown:
Thanks, I was hoping to get some expert advice and not just self proclaimers.
Tulip: Yes, LOL, that is in Celcius! Thanks for your info on sexes and the nest. I didn't know they don't sleep in it. I thought it was a home inside of a home for them. Good to know!
To everyone, it will be hard to decide on the best answer. All informative. Thanks all!
I'm not choosing best answer yet so please give your expert two cents.
Question #9:
My birds pecked one of my birds to death. Why?!?
I have Cokatiels, Parakeets a Dove and a Lovebird. I keep them TOGETHER, and they've been together for years. So we recently moved them into a really huge cage. They've been together for a month or 2 now and everything was fine. But the other day one of my Parakeets (a female) was pecked to DEATH. Why would they do that? Well I don't know exactly who killed her, or if they all helped. But I have heard that when you move birds into another cage they start to quarrel or whatever. But they've been there for a while. Maybe it was a fight over food? Any suggestions? Not that I can help it now, but I'm really curious so I know how to prevent it from happening again. Seperation?Question #10:
Help! Bird older than expected!!?
Hi,Monday I got a parakeet, and he looked young. Today he got the ring in his eyes!! Can he still be tamed as easily as a younger bird?Question #11:
How do I convince my dad to let me take my new parakeet to the vet for a check up?
I want to be a good owner (I've been reading a lot on parakeets) and have been reading that a new bird needs a check up. Is it really all that necessary; I got him from Petco so I'm thinking yes? The only problem is the money because this check up, which is $49 in my area, would also have to include my brother and sister's parakeets. But if it's not all that necessary, then... Great. I just need to know.
Question #12:
Does a parakeet need to be hand trained before I take it to the vet for a check up?
This is my first time owning a bird and going to an avian vet.Question #13:
My parakeet is sick, so what can I do for him?
Hi, so yesterday I noticed my parakeet was a little puffed up, and I kept my eye on him, but today when I got home from school early, I noticed he was sitting at the body of his cage. He is so lethargic! I got him out, and noticed he had lost a LOT of weight, and told my mom, and we called the vet but they won't be able to look at him until Thursday. So I put a soaked washcloth in a bag, and heated the bag up, then wrapped it in another towl, and put him on it. I put some seed down, and he's been eating a bunch, so hopefully that will bring his weight up. I brought his best friend (another cockatiel) out to give him some company, and I used a dropper to make him drink.
It's been an hour since all that, and now he is sitting there with his head buried in his feathers along his back. I feel so awful, I should of noticed sooner.
We have also been going to a bunch of pet shops recently, but most of the time I changed my clothes and took a shower as soon as I came home. There was this one time when I went to Petland, and played with a couple parakeets, before I came home. I washed my hands and arms, then changed my shirt and pants, then took all my birds out to play.
It's also been a little cold recently, especially at night.
He is the only bird acting like this.
Oh! And we're worried he might have mites. Could mites have drained all his energy, so he hasn't been able to eat or drink?
Please give me some advice! Thank you!
Question #14:
First time parakeet owner, avian vet?
So I have a few questions pertaining to my new parakeet who I have had for 3 days and can already be let out of his cage, petted, and is still learning the step up trick. Anyways, this is my first actual pet that my dad finally allowed me to have and I want to be the best owner possible. I heard birds need check ups, especially when you first get them. I got mine from petco (-_- I know....)Is a check up really needed (because I don't want to make my dad waste money and it took a lot to convince him)? And do avian vets care enough for an animal so small? I've already found one in an animal hospital but I feel they're more looking for birds like parrots. My parakeet is so tiny I feel like they won't care.
Please no bad comments. I really want him/her to live as long as possible. Thank you!
P.s. any tips would be much appreciated!
Question #15:
Help! Found an injured parakeet, how can I take care of him/her?
Poor little fella, my brother found an injured and wet parakeet on the street this morning and brought it home. We have lovebirds as well so we gave the parakeet lovebird food.I think this bird has stopped bleeding, because there seems to be no blood on the tissues lining the bottom of the cage we put him/her in, but it keeps pulling its own feathers out. It's the saddest thing.
For now, We've put in a mirror in the cage, hoping it will make it less lonely and I guess that seems to have worked for now. The situations not dire anymore
But what can we do to help this poor parakeet? And help it heal? It can fly but its limping on one foot. (Can't take it to a vet, called 10 vets around the area. Only 3 help birds and its going to cost 130 at least) Would you recommend buying this bird a parakeet companion or waiting till its fully healed? And from here, how can I get this parakeet to trust us after all its been through? Please help, I really want this poor guy to live.
Also, I just discovered bird can get mites. This bird I've decided to name Yoda was found in the street, and it has a few dots on its forehead (don't know if its natural markings) and its currently night but the bird is restless. Regardless of whether its mites, can I still go buy mite/lice spray and spray it on this bird? I have a terrible phobia of licelike bugs and I can't even sleep after discovering parakeets can have it. But I don't want to injure the bird even more. What should I do?
Question #16:
Why are my parakeets fighting?
I had a blue parakeet and the others kept dying so he was mostly always alone. Then one day I got a white bird and she was good friends with him, but one day he died. I know she didn't do it because he probably poisoned himself by eating his poop or something, and when I woke up he was acting weird. When I got home my sister was crying because he had died. After a couple days she stopped calling for him and did nothing. Then a month later we got a green parakeet and he was way smaller than her. She is a very nice parakeet, but sometimes she hits him and won't stop. We sometimes put our hands on her beak to stop her, and show her were the boss.I think sh'e trying to show that she's more dominant but i don't know. Please, help im worriedQuestion #17:
Please help with my bird.?
Currently I have a rare parakeet (please note he is not a bulgie but is still a parakeet. Confusing I know.) I got him for my birthday last year and this year I'm goingt to get another one. I want to get a female and breed them but I'm not sure how. I also need help on how to tell what gender they are. What cage size should I have for both of them and should I seperate them when I first get the girl so I can fingure train her or put them right together. No websites pleease and 10 points for the best answerQuestion #18:
Pet finches that can live alone?
I have quite a few pets, including 2 parakeets, who I devote many hours to every week. They are the little noise-makers of the house and they sing so beautifully and cheerfully, I'd get more than 2 but of course they ONLY sing and act comfortable in their small cage. I had a large breeding cage for them to live in, but they were mostly silent the 3 months they were in it. Literally the day I moved them into their smaller cage, they sang so loudly and happily. So I have this small canary-size cage and the huge cage left over. I'd like zebra finches, but are there any other relatively friendly/tameable finches I may buy?I'd also like to know if there are any species of finches that can live singly in cages, not in pairs or groups. I'd put that bird cage next to the budgie cage to keep them company, as I prefer single birds to keep them friendly toward me (the 2nd budgie was a rescue and I wasn't going to get a 2nd one, but she's lovely and the male loves me more than her so it's alright). So the budgies would be able to sing and keep the bird company while I'm away and when I'm back I'll be spending most of the time around the cages in my room.
...Or would the finch hate to be next to the budgies and should I keep it in a separate room?
Also... if I don't get finches, I'll probably buy a canary and keep him in the little cage!
Are there any other finches that would be lovely little singers in the big cage? It's about 3 feet long, 1 1/2 feet tall, and the width is around 2 feet. I do really love the noise because it keeps me company, along with my dog, cats, and fish.
Do you have finches? What species are they and do they sing a lot?
Do I make any sense? (hehe)
I have a lot of questions, but I've never learned anything about finches before this!
Thank you!!!
