Parakeet Cages

Parakeet Cages

What should you look for in a cage for your parakeet? A parakeet cage should provide bar spacing of 1/2 inch.

Horizontal width is more important than vertical height as parakeets fly back and forth horizontally. parakeets are not helicopters.

Avoid cages with odd shapes, like domes, houses, palaces. They may look cool but they provide less space for your parakeet to play and fly and also provide areas for the parakeet to poop and fling food outside of the cage more than rectangular cages.

Avoid round cages. A parakeet needs one side of the cage against the wall, so they can feel safe and secure.

Flight cages are always preferred. Even if you give your bird hours of flight time outside their cage every day, there will be days that you are unable to do so. The tiny cages sold for parakeets in pet stores are only big enough to use as travel cages. A bird not only needs to be able to turn around and spread their wings but needs to be able to fly. They are birds, after all. It's bad enough that we put these little creatures in cages, let's at least make sure they can still fly and be birds whilst inside these cages.

A cage for a single parakeet should be no less than 24x16x16.

A cage for two parakeets should be no less than 30x18x18.

A cage for more than 2 parakeets should be 32 width and 21 depth.

This is the most popular parakeet cage available, known in parakeet circles as "Everyone's Favorite Cage".

A parakeet cage should be made of stainless steel or power-coated. Avoid brass and nickle as these can be toxic to parakeets. parakeet's use their beaks to climb their cage and they love to chew so the material the bird cage is made of is very important.

Avoid cages with rust as this can be toxic to parakeets.

A parakeet cage will need a rope perch, real wood perches, a stone nail-health perch, various toys, clean water, food, cuttlebone, mineral block, plain newsprint or similiar for lining.

Avoid: mite blocks, gravel, grit, sand paper perches or sand paper lining, wood chips, shredded bedding. All of these things are bad for parakeets.

Mite blocks have harmful fumes that are dangerous for parakeets fragile respiratory systems.

Gravel and grit is for birds that don't hull their seeds but instead eat them whole and have gizzards that hull the seeds. parakeets don't have gizzards and they hull their seeds. Grit can cause crop impaction which can lead to death.

Sand paper perches and lining is harmful to parakeet's tender feet.

Woodchips and shredded bedding and corn cob can also cause crop impaction. They can also release harmful fumes (pine/cedar). Also, beddings can harbor mold. Plain newsprint or similiar allows you to keep track of your parakeets poop. Your parakeet's poop can tell you immediately if your parakeet is healthy or sick.
